Main menu in S60v2 phones allows users to rename only folders. This trick enables users to edit names of applications.
You will need:
- S60v2 phone (Tested on Nokia N72)
- A file explorer which allows access to system files. (e.g. X-plore, FExploreretc. X-plore will be used in the tutorial.)
Method:
We will rename ‘Go to’ application to ‘Pinboard’
1.Select the icon of ‘Go to’ in My own folder.
2.Select Options>Move to folder>Menu>Ok. (Screenshot 1)
3.Move back to main menu.
4.Again select the icon.
5.Select Options>Move.
6.Select the top-left icon on the main menu. (Screenshot 2)
7.Select Ok. ‘Go to’ icon should now appear at the top-left of your main menu. (Screenshot 3)
8.Open your file explorer.
9.Go to C:\System\Apps
10.Rename any folder by adding a ‘.’ to its name. (Screenshot 4)
11.Most probably the folder will not be renamed. If it is renamed, restore it back to the original. (We just want to refresh the main menu.) (Screenshot 5)
12.Quickly press the menu key.
13.Select any folder (and not application) and select options. (Screenshot 6 and 7)
14.Wait for the menu to refresh due to step 10.
15.‘Go to’ icon, behind the options menu, will be selected. (Screenshot 8)
16.Select Rename, edit the name and select Ok. (Screenshot 9 and 10)
17.Move the icon back to My own.
Reset the main menu
View screenshots
Background:
Main menu in S60v2 phones has folders like Imaging, My own, Office, Tools, Connect. which have custom icons. These folders can be deleted, if all the items in the folder are moved to other folders or main menu. Once deleted these folders with custom icons cannot be recreated. Folders created with ‘New folder’ option have default icon. This trick is useful for getting back those folders. The trick can also be used, if you have messed up the menu by moving items haphazardly.
(Screenshot 1)
(Note: You will lose any folder you have created. The menu will reset to factory settings. You will not lose any of your applications. All applications installed by you will be placed in ‘My own’ folder.)
You will need:
- S60v2 phone (Tested on Nokia N72)
- A file explorer which allows access to system files. (e.g. X-plore, FExploreretc. X-plore will be used in the tutorial.)
Method:
1.Open your file explorer.
2.Go to C:\System\Data\Applications.dat
3.Rename it to ‘Applications1.dat’ (Screenshot 2)
4.Go to main menu.
5.Select Options>Exit. (Do not use right soft key to exit. It does not exit menu, just hides it from foreground.) (Screenshot 3)
6.Press Menu key to start the menu.
7.Bingo! Your menu is reset. (Screenshot 4)
8.In case you want to get back your old menu, just delete new automatically
created ‘Applications.dat’,
rename ‘Applications1.dat’ back to ‘Applications.dat’ and restart the menu.
Replace the name of the operator with an own picture
View screenshots: 1 to 6and 7 to11 Background:
Name of the operator appears at the top of the home screen. We can replace the name with our custom made picture. This trick is operator specific i.e. you will have to create a picture for every operator sim card, you use on the phone.
You will need:
- S60v2 phone (Tested on Nokia N72)
- FExplorer
- Image editing/cropping tool for PC or Mobile
Method: 1.Create a .bmp image of resolution 97X25. This can be done easily in any image editing software like paint etc.
(Screenshot 1) (Download the picture used in screenshots)(7.18 KB) (Right click on the link and click 'Save Target As...')
2.Keep your sim card inserted in the phone.
3.Open FExplorer. Select Options>Phone>Network info. (Screenshot 3)
4.Note down the numbers written against the MCC and MNC. (Screenshot 4)
5.Name the picture created in step 1 as __0.bmp. For e.g. MCC Code is 111 and MNC Code is 66, name the file as 111_66_0.bmp
6.Transfer the file to phone, if created on PC.
7.In FExplorer, go to C:\System\Apps\Phone\OpLogo. If this path does not exist create the necessary folders (most probably you will have to create ‘Phone’ folder in ‘Apps’ and ‘OpLogo’ folder in ‘Phone’)
8.Copy the picture file in ‘OpLogo’ folder. (Screenshot 5)
9.Exit FExplorer. Press Power key (key used to switch off mobile, change profiles etc.) (Screenshot 6)
10.Select Offline. Press power key again and select your profile. (e.g. General etc.)
11.Select ‘Yes’ for warning shown for accessing network. You are done. (Screenshot 7 and 8)
12.Create pictures for all the operators you use, name them according to MMC and MNC codes and place them into OpLogo folder.
13.Same picture may not look good for all the themes. You may create different pictures for all themes or you can use a blank picture(58 bytes) (Right click on the link and click 'Save Target As...'), which is useable in all themes. (Screenshot 9, 10 and 11)
Setting up a custom screensaver
View screenshots: 1 to 8and 9-10 Background:
By default s60v2 phone allows us to set ‘Date and Time’ and ‘Text’ as a power saver (screensaver). We can add a custom power saver to this list. You will need:
- S60v2 phone (Tested on Nokia N72)
- A file explorer which allows access to system files. (e.g. X-plore, FExploreretc. X-plore will be used in the tutorial.)
- The ‘screensavers.zip’(7.27 KB) (Right click on the link and click 'Save Target As...')
- MBM Tool for PC/ MBM Tool for Mobile(MBM Tool for PC will be used here)
Method:
1.Extract and copy the contents of ‘screensavers.zip’ to ‘C:\System\ screensavers’ using your file explorer. (Create the folder if it does not exist.) (Screenshot 1)
2.Edit ‘BmpAnimScrPlugin.ini’ in any text editor (Screenshot 2) 3.name= *.to set the name as ‘Jay’ enter name=Jay
4.Steps 5 to 8 can be skipped if you do not want to change the timings of screensaver.
5.runningtime=
*.to set 60 seconds enter runningtime=60000000
*.i.e. after your screensaver has run for 60 seconds, ‘Date and time power saver’ will start running.
6.suspendtime=
*.to run only custom screensaver enter suspendtime=0 *.i.e. ‘Date and time power saver’ will run for 0 second and again your screen saver will start.
*.to run ‘Date and time power saver’ indefinitely after running time enter suspendtime=-1
*.i.e. your screensaver will not start again.
*.to set power saver for 10 seconds enter suspendtime=10000000
*.i.e. your screen saver will start after 10 seconds.
7.timing=
*.to show every image for 5 second enter timing=5000000
*.(ideal for slide show screensaver) (uses less battery)
*.to show 12 images in every second enter timing=83333
*.(ideal for animated screensaver) (uses more battery)
8.lights=
*.lights=0 (uses less battery)
*.lights=1 (uses more battery)
9.Save and close the file.
10.Go to Main
menu>Tools>Settings>Phone>Display>Pwr. saver time-out (Screenshot 3)
11.Set the time to start the screen saver.
12.Goto Main
menu>Tools>Themes>{Your Current Theme}>Edit>Power saver (Screenshot 4)
13.Select the power saver having name given by you in step 3.
14.The image/s to be shown while running screensaver are in ‘BmpAnimScrPlugin.mbm’ file.
15.You have to create a custom .mbm file using MBM Tool.
16.First you will need your images in .bmp format. Create some images in paint of resolution 176X208.
*.Screensaver can be either a slide show (e.g. Screenshots 5, 6 etc.) or a animation (e.g. Screenshot 7,8 etc.)
*.Tip: Do not use many images as it will increase the size of the .mbm file and also the battery consumption while running the screensaver. You should use maximum 10-11 images. Prefer use of black and white images, they look good even without backlight. Colours may not be useful as most of the time your screensaver will be running without backlight.
17.Open MBM Tool. Go to File>Insert images to list.
18.Select all your files and click open. (Screenshot 9)
19.Keep all images selected and Go to Images>Change colour
20.This list of colours will help us to control size of the file. Select ‘Monochrome 1bpp’, if you have black and white images. This will reduce the file to smallest size. If you have gray scale images select up to ‘Monochrome 8bpp’. For colour images you can select from ‘Colour 4bpp’ for bad image at smaller size to ‘Colour 24bpp’ for good image at larger size. Click Ok. (Screenshot 10)
21.Go to File>Save mbm file as
22.Select the location and save the file as ‘BmpAnimScrPlugin.mbm’
*.Tip: Make sure that the location path does not contain spaces. The software has a bug in saving the file to a location path having spaces. Ideally save it to ‘C:\BmpAnimScrPlugin.mbm’.
23.Transfer the file to phone and replace it over the original file in ‘C:\System\screensavers’ folder. You are done.
24.You can also use a .gif file to create a .mbm file. Instead of inserting images in step 17 and 18, go to File>Import from animated gif and select the .gif file. Rest of the steps remain same.
Change icon of an application
View screenshots: 1 to 8and 9 to 16
Background:
Some of the applications do not come with good icon. We can change this icon, using this trick. Note: This trick works only with applications having icons in .aif files and not with the ones having icons in .mif files. You will need:
- S60v2 phone (Tested on Nokia N72)
- A file explorer which allows access to system files. (e.g. X-plore, FExploreretc. X-plore will be used in the tutorial.)
- MBM Tool for mobile
- Image editing/cropping tool for PC or Mobile
Method:
We will change icon of FExplorer.
1.First of all you will need 4 images (in .jpg, .bmp or .png formats) (Screenshot 1) (Download icons used in Screenshots)(5.59 KB) (Right click on the link and click 'Save Target As...')
*.1st image should have resolution 44X44. This will be used at the top of the running application.
*.2nd image should also have resolution 44X44 and is mask of first image.
*.3rd image should have resolution 42X29. This will be used in the main menu as application icon.
*.4th image should also have resolution 42X29 and is mask of third image.
*.Note: Mask is the used to determine the transparent part of the main image. The black portion on mask will make the same portion on main image opaque. The white portion on mask will make the corresponding portion on main image transparent. Gray shades will make corresponding portion of main image semitransparent.
2.Name them 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the order mentioned above and place these images in E:\python\mbmtool\img using your file explorer (there should not be any other file in that folder) (Screenshot 4)
3.Open MBM tool and select the E: drive. Make sure that you are in img tab. (You can preview your images here.) (Screenshot 5)
4.Select Options>Conversion>24bit/8bit. (Screenshot 6)
5.Select Options>Pack and select Ok. (Screenshot 7)
6.Switch to mbm tab by pressing right scroll key. (You can check the the content of the .mbm file here, make sure the files are in the same order as mentioned in point 1)
7.Select the newly created .mbm file and select Options>Create Icons (Screenshot 8)
8.Select third otption i.e. 'Get UID from existing app file' (You can use 'Enter UID' option, if you know the UID of application for which you want to create icon) (You can use second option i.e. 'Get UID from existing aif file', if you want to extract UID from existing .aif file) (Screenshot 9)
9.Navigate to the E:\System\Apps\FExplorer and select FExplorer.app (Screenshot 10)
10.Enter Icon Name as "FExplorer" and select Ok twice. (Screenshot 11)
11.Use your file explorer to navigate to E:\System\Apps\FExplorer and rename the FExplorer.aif file to FExplorer1.aif
12.Move the newly created aif file from E:\python\mbmtool\aif to E:\System\Apps\FExplorer (Screenshot 12)
13.Rename the moved aif file to FExplorer.aif (Screenshot 13)
14.Open main menu and select Option>Exit (Do not use right soft key to exit. It does not exit menu, just hides it from foreground.) (Screenshot 14)
15.Open main menu again. (Screenshot 15 and 16)
